one-day course
hurdle making |
Each year, course tutor Richard King cuts enough willow (of one and two year growth) for three months of hurdle making. On this course you will get to make your own hurdle and see a small-scale, seasonal hurdle-making business in operation.
Hurdles are traditional portable fence panels for folding (making pens for) sheep. Nowadays they are also used as ornamental garden fences. They can be made from coppiced willow or hazel. Richard will talk about the differences, and you will also get to see growing trees, and learn how to select materials from them.
There are two styles of hurdle-making. 1-year-old willow is used in the round (whole), and 2-year-old willow is split before weaving. You’ll have a go at both, or you can choose to use just one method in your hurdle.
Course will include:
- discussion of the growing properties of willow and simple cultivation
- material selection for two styles of weaving
- safe effective use of a bill hook
- willow cleaving techniques
- weaving a finished panel up to a maximum size of 6ft x 3ft, or to fit your transport
Good outdoor wear, gloves and boots strongly advised.
