This weekend course will be an introduction to the history and practices of green woodworking (the working of unseasoned wood in log form), with emphasis on pole-lathe wood turning. Introductory discussion and books on Friday night will be followed on Saturday morning with a selection of projects including making mallets, wedges and tent pegs to introduce you to the safe, accurate use of axes and saws, and to get the feel of working with green wood. This is ideal preparation for moving on to the pole-lathe in the afternoon and on Sunday, practicing the ways that the ancients turned wood so efficiently and to such high quality. You should be able to make several items, from a garden dibber to tool handles and perhaps a captive ring rattle (a child's toy that has interlocking rings made from the same piece of wood). There will be the option of contributing to a group chair-making, and between stoking the kettle fire and endless cups of tea, course tutor Richard will demonstrate a wide range of related tools, devices and techniques. Course will include:
Outdoor clothes, boots and leather gloves are advised. All tools provided but feel free to bring your own if you wish.
