two-weekend course

bow making

venue: the Middlewood Trust, Lancashire

This two-weekend course allows us to cover all aspects of wooden bow making from tree selection through shaping the stave, tillering and finishes to string making.

Making a one-piece all wooden bow is a magical experience. We will be making flatbows from ash or elm based on ancient designs. The bow will be tailored to the needs of each individual participant

The course covers:

  • timber selection
  • preparing and seasoning the timber
  • bow design
  • using a side-axe and drawknife to rough out the bow
  • tillering
  • finishes and hand-grips
  • string making

The course runs from 10am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday, and you can arrive Friday evening if you like. Bring work clothes and stout footwear. Lunch will be provided each day. Bring your own food for evening meal and breakfast; cooking facilities and cutlery/crockery are available in our bunkhouse. Bunk house, yurt accommodation, plus camping available. Bring a sleeping bag.
