Course tutor is Paula Sunshine - author of Wattle and Daub

This course will demonstrate how one of the oldest and 'greenest' building methods known can still be utilised today to build structures in which to live, work and play.

Points covered throughout the day:

  • wattle & daub - what is it made from and how is it made?
  • the history of wattle and daub use
  • why is wattle & daub so 'green'? re-use and disposal
  • the different systems of wattle & daub to be found throughout the UK - woven, tied, nailed; used for walls and ceilings
  • how to look after wattle & daub structures
  • coatings, paints and plasters
  • repairing wattle & daub
  • exploring breathability and why it is so important
  • decorative wattle & daub - pargetting for fun and creativity

Course participants will get the opportunity to help make a wattle panel, puddle together clay, straw and water to make daub and complete a wattle & daub panel from start to finish. Creative students may even get the chance to learn how to make decorative patterns using clay daub. Wellies, old clothes and rubber gloves are essential.
