one-day course

living willow structures

venue: Heeley City Farm, Sheffield

This course introduces living willow as an attractive material that is easy to work with and can be put to many uses - for example canopies, bowers, chairs, tunnels, children's play frames, or 'fedges' (living fences). The difference with a living willow structure is that it's alive - i.e. it's taking in CO2, it's providing a habitat, and it's beautiful. Willow comes in many different colours, from greens, browns and yellows to reds and purples.

Points that will be covered during the day:

  • living willow past and present
  • willow varieties and their uses
  • selecting good tools and materials
  • planting and growing willow
  • working with willow rods
  • basic structure building techniques
  • designing and making willow structures
  • aftercare

Course participants will take part in designing and creating a living willow structure and will also make items to take home. Warm clothing and gardening gloves are essential.
