residential weekend course

managing small woodlands

venue: Folly Farm, nr. Bristol

This course is run by Andy Reynolds of IBS Woodland Training - chainsaw instructor, smallholder, and professional forester, working and specialising in lowland forestry. It is for anyone who has woodland, or just wants to know how woodlands are best managed.

The course covers all aspects of sustainable woodland management, including the felling of trees, using or selling the timber, planting trees and regenerating woodland, as well as woodland ecology and landscape concerns.

It is full of practical tips, know-how and walks in the woods. The course takes participants through the various methods of managing lowland woodlands, from traditional coppice firewood production to group selection (selecting a group of trees of the right age to fell for marketing or use) in neglected or degraded areas.

We will look at:

  • legal constraints
  • ecology and woodland operations
  • felling systems
  • forward planning for sustainable production
  • woodland surveying
  • woodland produce & sales
  • production for home use

this is an extremely useful piece of kit called a 'skidder'; it pivots in the middle and has a winch on the back for extracting felled timber from woodlands
