This course will give a general introduction to natural building and reviews the various alternatives available. It will then focus on building with hemp based materials.

Topics to be covered:

  • the use of lime in building (both historic repairs and new build)
  • the history and uses of hemp
  • ntroduction to hemp and lime (hemcrete) in buildings
  • case studies
  • practical work to build a hemcrete wall
  • the thermal performance of hemcrete
  • practicalities of designing hemcrete buildings and building regs
  • hemcrete and the code for sustainable homes
