| thermafleece sheep's wool insulation Completely natural and safe, wool does such a good job of keeping sheep and people warm, it is obviously the ideal insulation for buildings too.
Thermafleece is supplied in batts 1200mm long, either 400 or 600mm wide, and in three thicknesses: 50mm, 75mm and 100mm. The density of the batts has been designed so that the wool insulation is roughly equivalent to the same thickness of mineral wool/glass fibre - making it easy to know the thickness of sheep's wool insulation required.
Note that Thermafleece is sold in packs that are typically two or three times bigger than the packs of rock wool and glass fibre batts at builders' merchants, so don't be put off by the relatively high price per pack (if you want to make price comparisons base them on the square metre-age that the packs cover). The price difference between Thermafleece and glass fibre is not as big as you would probably expect.
Wool has many environmental advantages over mineral wool and glass fibre. It only takes one seventh the energy to make Thermafleece that is required to make glass fibre. Thermafleece is also non irritating for skin and lungs, making it much more pleasant and safer to work with than conventional insulation. Another key benefit of wool, unlike other insulation, is that it is hygroscopic, so it has excellent condensation control properties, absorbing water vapour in winter (helping to warm the building) and releasing water vapour in summer (helping to cool the building).
Thermafleece is fire resistant and insect proof (due to the inclusion of naturally derived additives). Life expectancy is the same as your building. At the end of life, it can be safely recycled: contains no permethrin, pyrethroids, pesticides or formaldehydes.
Thermafleece can be used as conventional loft insulation, and for insulation for roofs, floors and walls too. As well as providing thermal insulation, Thermafleece can also be used for sound (acoustic) insulation in buildings. Manufacturer's technical advice line available on 0870 2406715 (for U value and condensation risk analysis calculations, advice on building regulations, etc). BBA approved. Thermafleece has a thermal conductivity (k value) of 0.039, and the R values are 1.29 (50mm), 1.94 (75mm) and 2.58 (100mm). U values are 50mm --- U = 0.775 75mm --- U = 0.515 100mm --- U = 0.387 150mm --- U = 0.258 200mm --- U = 0.194 250mm --- U = 0.155 300mm --- U = 0.129
